NET - SCIENZA TOGETHER: Tor Caldara: an itinerary between geology, environment and history
The Tor Caldara Nature Reserve extends for 44 hectares in a non-urbanized stretch of coast between Anzio and Lavinio, 60 km south of Rome. Inside there is a sixteenth-century watchtower placed in a dense tangle of Mediterranean scrub, a rare testimony of the ancient coastal forests along the coast of southern Lazio. From a geological point of view, the Tor Caldara solfatara is linked to the secondary activity of the Lazio volcanic district

This area, in the past, has been the subject of geological studies by scientists who have used this site as a natural laboratory for educational activities; still today the Reserve is particularly suitable for educational purposes, for the beauty of the geological exposures and for the spectacular secondary volcanic phenomena still active. In addition to the geological features, the area is a small biodiversity hotspot and hosts a Natura 2000 site, due to the naturalistic importance of habitats such as the Mediterranean holm oak woods (and scrub) and the vegetation of Mediterranean cliffs; the site also hosts Cyperus polystachyus a "small papyrus" present in Italy only in two sites, both with the presence of sulfataras
