The Geological Survey of Italy - ISPRA in collaboration with the Department of Earth Sciences, University "La Sapienza" of Rome, the Italian Geological Society and the Order of Geologists of Lazio, organizes on 25, 26 and 27 June 2013 at the Department of Earth Sciences (Aula 11), P.le Aldo Moro 5, three seminars on three groups fossils of Paleogene.

The seminars are dedicated to the dissemination of the latest knowledge about taxonomy, biostratigraphy and paleoecology of larger foraminifera, calcareous nannofossils and planktonic foraminifera of the Paleogene, very interesting time from the geological and evolutionary point of view.
The seminar is intended for a maximum of 110 participants and is addressed primarily to researchers and geologists of the Geological Surveys, the Regional and Provincial Agencies and other public research institutions as well as graduate students and undergraduate students.
It will be distribute material related to the covered topics and a certificate of participation. Each seminar will give credits for professional updated for members of the Order of Geologists.

Subscription must be done for each seminar.

Seminar June 25, 2013  "The larger foraminifera of the Paleogene: classification, biostratigraphy and paleoecology"
Teachers: Prof. Johannes Pignatti University "La Sapienza" of Rome, Dr. Cesare Andrea Papazzoni University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.

The objective of the Seminar is to provide useful information on the use of foraminifera in the study of Paleogene deposits, due to their high biostratigraphic, paleoenvironmental and paleobathymetric significance,
They represents a good guide fossils for these environments having large horizontal distribution and vertical distribution restricted to specific and generic level. It will be also  provide guidance about the tools useful for the recognition of this fossil group for the activities of the geological survey also by means of  the 'identification of some taxa to the microscope.

Seminar June 26, 2013
"The calcareous nannofossils in the Paleogene: classification, biostratigraphy and paleoecology"
Teacher: professor Isabella Raffi University "G. D'Annunzio "of Chieti-Pescara
The aim of the seminar is to illustrate the biogenic carbonate sediments of the deep sea through the study of calcareous nannofossils.
These microfossils are of great importance from the lithogenetic point of view and are fundamental for the biochronological and biostratigraphic studies of sea sediments starting from the Jurassic period. Their study has several interesting aspects and applications, from biostratigraphy applied to geological survey, and biochronology.

Petrizzo-3.jpgSeminar June 27, 2013
"The planktonic foraminifera of the Paleogene: classification, biostratigraphy and paleoecology"
Teacher: Dr. Maria Rose Petrizzo, Department of Earth Sciences  "A. Desio "- University of Milan.
The aim of the seminar is to illustrate the evolutionary processes of the planktonic foraminifera of the Paleogene through the distinguishing morphological features of the different taxa, the distribution and their paleoecological and paleoceanographic significance. The study of these fossils has several interesting aspects and applications, from biostratigraphy applied to geological survey, to the biochronology, to their use as a paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental indicators. We will provide also basic guidelines useful for the recognition of this fossil group, also through the identification of some taxa under the microscope as a practical working tool for those who work in this field and especially for those who deal with the geological survey and mapping.
