Edinburgh: ISPRA's president at the EPA  Network

"Despite the enormous effort and the role played by the European Environment Agency, only a few national agencies, including the Italian one, seem to be aware of the urgency of developing a common policy and position at this particular moment when the Copernicus program is defining priorities for user services. I invite the EPA Network and the environmental agencies to reflect on the opportunity to develop, in a short time, a coordinated action on the theme, which has as priority objectives the needs of the community and the development of environmental protection", said ISPRA’s President Stefano Laporta, representing Italy, during his speech at the 31st EPA Network Plenary Session, started today in Edinburgh in the presence of the General Directors and Presidents of the Environmental Agencies of the European countries and other delegates.

At the meeting opening, the representative of the European Commission, Thomas Verheye, updating the delegates on the environmental policies of the Union, underlined that  the World Economic Forum has officially recognized that of the 10 big risks for the global economy, 9 are tied to the capital natural. The same Executive Director of the European Environment Agency stressed the importance of reinforcing European activities in the field of environmental accounting, and the role of Copernicus. During the previous plenary session, the Italian proposal to discuss ways to harmonize environmental controls in the European Union was accepted, on the model of the National System for Environmental Protection (SNPA). During the meeting scheduled for tomorrow, the ISPRA delegation will lead the debate on the topic.
