Geological memory sites in the Latium region
The concepts of geodiversity protection and enhancement and conservation of the geological heritage, at the basis of the Geosites system, is well established in the culture of the territory. Alongside sites worthy of protection for the presence of 'geological objects', there are other places that deserve attention for the presence of significant events for the progress of geological science: the “sites of geological memory”.
Even today, geologists cannot overlook the vast amount of information collected in the past by our predecessors, just as they must not ignore the territorial changes, often occurred in recent times, which have led to the disappearance of outcropping sites of "geological phenomena" of primary importance for the reconstruction of the geological history of places.
The aim of the project, the results of which are presented in this volume, is precisely that of helping to keep alive the "geological memory" related to the sites, present in the Latium region, in which the history of geology has been written. This objective has been achieved through the census, the deepening and dissemination of knowledge of the "sites of geological memory" through a series of scientific articles that collect the description of the places, the geological events identified and, last but not least, the scientists who contributed to spread the interest in that particular place.
The sites are presented starting from the Tyrrhenian coast, with the Ladispoli iron beaches, to explore counterclockwise at first the Tuscia and Sabina areas to the north, then Ciociaria and Pianura Pontina to the south, thus reaching the metropolitan area of Rome and finally the Capital, which naturally excels for the density of places and events.
