Monitoring, census, removal and recycling of ghost nets: fishermen as key players in the safeguard of the sea

The Mo.Ri.net project (Monitoring, census, removal and recycling of ghost nets: fishermen as key players in the safeguard of the sea)  aims to give a concrete contribution to addressing the problem of marine litter, which causes direct and severe environmental impacts on protected species, habitats and ecosystems.

The primary objective is to restore compromised marine habitats through concrete actions of litter removal (plastics, ghost nets, lost or abandoned fishing gear), actively involving fishermen and by awareness activities on this issue.

The project will be carried out in Sardinia (Italy), both inside and outside the marine protected areas of Asinara Island and Capo Carbonara.

Funding: € 460.600,00. Duration: 18 months.

The Mo.Ri.net project is implemented under the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF) 2014/2020 Call Proposals related to Measure 1.40 art. 40, par.1, lett. a) of Reg. (EU) n. 508/2014 Call 2018: Protection and restoration of marine biodiversity and ecosystems and compensation schemes in sustainable fisheries - Removal of marine litter (lost fishing gear and marine litter) by fishermen.

The European Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Fund (EMFF) 2014/2020 is also funding the GoFree project, where ISPRA is also coordinator, in Call Proposals of the Sardinia Region, for the Implementation of Measure 1. 26 Innovation, "Introduction of the striped humpback shrimp (Plesionika edwarsii) fishery in Sardinia, analysis of alternative conservation methodologies to bisulfite", which aims to introduce and incentivize the fishing of batial shrimp with creels in Sardinian seas, introducing innovative measures both in the fishing process and in the treatment on board and ashore of the catch.

ISPRA, coordinating both projects, aims at pursuing, in a synergistic and transversal way, the objectives of eco-sustainability of traditional fishing activities, through an ecosystem approach, placing the marine environment and fishermen as main actors.
