National census of mining sites disused

The census of  mining sites disused sites was carried out by APAT (today ISPRA) starting from paragraph 1 of article 22 of law 179 of 07/31/02 "Environmental provisions", which reads: «... the Minister of 'environment and protection of the territory carries out a census of all abandoned mining sites'.
The scope of application of this census was defined starting from 1870, the year in which, with the annexation of Rome, the process of unification of Italy can be said to have been completed, and regards all solid minerals of the first category as defined in 'art. 2 of the RD n. 1443 of 07/29/1927. Therefore, liquid (petroleum) and gaseous (methane) fuels, mineral and thermal waters and geothermal fluids are excluded.
The "census of mining sites disused" throughout the country has been published with an update to 2006.

Italian mining sites (1870-2006)

 

The related information database has been updated up to the present day.
Overall, 3006 sites belonging to all Italian regions were surveyed: Sicily (761 sites), Sardinia (438), Tuscany (413) and Piedmont (378).
Of the 110 Italian provinces, only 17 have not been subject to mining, demonstrating the fact that it is a particularly widespread and important activity for the Italian socio-cultural development.
Finally, a mention of the most cultivated minerals: Sulfur (732), Cement Marl (405), Blenda and/or Galena (316).
