The National Geosite Directory's intents are the geoconservation and the realization of a selection of geological sites of national interest.

The project started in 2008 with the activation of a Working Group involving ISPRA and Regions and Autonomous Provinces, with the aim of::
- assessing the state of the national geological heritage, even in the light of introducing the issue of geological sites in the territorial planning, as provided by the "Code of Cultural Heritage and Landscape" (Decree. 42/2004), known as the Municipal Code;
- agreeing the criteria to choose between the regional and local sites of geological interest, those of national importance;
- aligning the existing data banks, even at local level, with those of the ISPRA's Geosite Data Bank and, not least, discussing the issues related to the protection of geological sites.

With this objective, the Working Table appointed a limited Working Group, consisting of the followin Regions: Campania, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Lazio, Marche, Molise and Emilia Romagna. They worked on the definition of criteria for the selection of geological sites of national interest.
The results of the work of the WG were presented at the workshop "From Census to a National Geosite Directory . Sharing experiences ", held in Rome, at the headquarters of ISPRA, June 4, 2009.
