The United Nations General Assembly has established this important event since 2003, after having declared 2002 "International Mountain Year (IMY)" and every year, at an international level, an object theme is identified by the management of the FAO-Mountain Partnership of the celebration.
The objective is to raise awareness among the population on the importance of the development and preservation of mountain territories, understood as unique economic, social, cultural and identity systems: on an area of 302,073 km2, Italy is characterized by 35% mountain territory and it is therefore essential to converge political support, scientific research and financial resources towards the objective of preventing further degradation and restoring mountain ecosystems.
