IPBES is looking for experts to draft the Second global assessment of biodiversity and ecosystem services
The IPBES (Intergovernmental Science-Policy Plaftorm on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services) has invited Governments and other stakeholders of member countries to nominate experts to draft a document of the “Second global assessment of biodiversity and ecosystem services (“Second Global Assessment”). The document has among its objectives the expansion of the results of the 2019 Global Assessment Report on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, integrating the most recent knowledge and evaluating progress towards the objectives of sustainability and harmony with nature.
The invitation to apply is aimed at young professionals (approximately under 35 years of age and with a maximum of 5-7 years from completing the academic qualification) interested in participating in the work of IPBES. Candidates should preferably have experience in regional and global analyzes of nature and its contributions to terrestrial, freshwater, coastal and marine ecosystems, and interdisciplinary training. Applications from people with expertise in indigenous and local knowledge are encouraged.
Activities and commitments required of experts:
Before submitting your application and to understand the activities and commitment required, interested parties are warmly invited to read the information document which summarizes the conditions and roles of the IPBES assessment (link).
All applicants must be available to participate in author meetings and training sessions, which are scheduled to start at the end of November 2025.
The selected scholars:
- They will contribute to the writing of specific chapters of the evaluation (their contribution will be acknowledged in the chapter citation).
- They will participate in author meetings and receive training on IPBES evaluation processes and the science-policy interface.
- They will be supported by a mentor for the entire duration of the assessment.
Application procedure:
- register on the IPBES website ((https://ipbes.net/user/register)
- once registered, fill out the application form and attach your curriculum vitae via the web portal dedicated to the address https://www.ipbes.net/second-global-assessment/experts-application (to access this page you must log in with your access credentials to the IPBES website)
- the nominating Government or organisation/institution, indicated by the candidate, will receive an email with a link to the nomination form and will be invited to approve and submit the nomination in the web portal
- Once the application has been submitted, the nominators and designees will receive a confirmation via e-mail
Interested researchers are invited to submit their application by 28 March 2025.
Additionally, an online meeting will be held on 12 March 2025 to discuss the process of nominating IPBES experts and young researchers and to share experiences from current and former members. Additional details will be published shortly.
