Mushrooms as biological indicators in monitoring the quality of the territory

The use of biological indicators for the assessment of environmental quality has become a widespread practice in Italy. The mushrooms are increasingly gaining a leading role in monitoring the quality of the territory through specialized trophic activities of the various taxa that guarantee the presence in all terrestrial habitats. In many cases, the presence or absence of fungal species is a useful indicator to assess the damage or the maturity of an ecosystem. Before reaching the definition of guidelines valid for all habitats of the country, it is necessary to check the experience that Italy has accumulated, and therefore concentrate the efforts to plan monitoring activities which can identify environmental parameters that cause measurable effects on mushrooms.
