Tor Caldara: an itinerary between geology, environment and history

Geological walks with ISPRA The Tor Caldara Nature Reserve is located south of Rome, between Anzio and Lavinio, and represents a geological-environmental treasure chest of unique value. The area is a rare testimony of the ancient coastal forests along the coast of southern Lazio and until recently it was exploited for the mining of sulfur, the presence of which is linked to the secondary activity of the Lazio volcanic district. The excursion will lead visitors to discover the geological and environmental characteristics of the Reserve, which is particularly suitable for educational purposes due to the spectacular secondary volcanic phenomena that are still active and the naturalistic importance of the habitats present.

COP14 on the conservation of wetlands

The 14th Meeting of the Conference of Contracting Parties to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands (COP14) is held November 5-13 in Wuhan, China, and Geneva, Switzerland. The theme of the COP is Wetlands Action for People and Nature. The Convention has as its objective the international protection of wetlands through their identification and delimitation, the study of the characteristic aspects, in particular of the avifauna, and the implementation of programs that allow the conservation of their habitats, flora and fauna. Currently 172 countries have signed up to the Convention, including all EU member states, and 2,455 Ramsar sites have been designated for a total area of ​​255,897,678 hectares.

Presentation of the Climate TRACE initiative at COP27 in Sharm el Sheik

2022 Straits Earthquake Exercise

The exercise on seismic and tsunami risks takes place in Calabria and Sicily From 4 to 6 November, the Calabria and Sicily regions are the protagonists of the exercise "Sisma dello Stretto 2022" which aims to test the operational response of the National Civil Protection Service to a seismic event, in a highly dangerous area. The coordination of the exercise is by the Department of Civil Protection, in agreement with the Regions involved and the Prefectures - UTG of Reggio Calabria and Messina. There are numerous components and operational structures that participate in the test, among these the Department's competence centers play a fundamental role for their activity of technical and scientific support to the activities.

The  COP27 , the climate conference organized annually by the United Nations, has begun as part of the Framework Conference on Climate Change (UNFCCC). To open the event in Sharm El-Sheikh, the High level segment, which saw the participation of heads of state and government to discuss cross-cutting issues, such as the just transition, the future of energy, innovative financing for the climate and development, food security, water security, climate change and sustainability of vulnerable communities. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni spoke with a very clear message, confirming Italy's commitment to meet the European targets set by the Fit for 55 package, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing the production of energy from renewable sources. He also stressed the importance of a just transition, supporting the countries most affected by the climate crisis. The activation of an Italian Climate Fund, envisaged in the 2022 Budget Law, of 840 million a year, for 5 years (2022-2026), was also announced, aimed at supporting developing countries to implement the decarbonisation of its economic activities. ISPRA takes part in COP27 within the Italian delegation, and provides technical support to the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security, with the monitoring of national greenhouse gas emissions and the definition of emission scenarios.

What is the impact of the wolf on livestock activities in Italy?

ISPRA has published a study on the estimate of the impact of the wolf on livestock activities in Italy for the period 2015 - 2019. According to the results of the national monitoring, the wolf has naturally returned to populate large regions of our country in the last fifty years. If on the one hand the presence of the wolf can be considered a great success in terms of conservation of the species, on the other hand its management requires an articulated comparison with those who carry out livestock activities in different areas of the country.

Kick-off Meeting of the PNRR project "Monitoring Earth's Evolution and Tectonics - MEET

The Kick-off Meeting of the PNRR project "Monitoring Earth's Evolution and Tectonics - MEET" will start on November 15th. ISPRA is Co-Proponent and partner of the project. Through the Work Package "Strengthening the national networks data production" ISPRA will consolidate and develop the Hydrogeochemical Platform of a continuous national hydrogeochemical network, while through the Work Package "Italian Platform for Solid Earth Science" ISPRA will develop this platform providing 3D geology data , of tectonics and faults capable of correlating with seismogenic sources.
