Dancalia: the contribution of Italian geologists in the exploration of the Afar
Jun 07, 2024 09:00 AM — Jun 07, 2024 05:00 PM Rome, Villa Celimontana

The conference entitled "Dancalia: the contribution of Italian geologists in the exploration of the Afar" will be held in Rome on 7 June. During the day there will be an in-depth analysis of the role played by the Italian scientific community in the exploration of the Danakil region (East Africa). In fact, there are many examples of geologists, explorers and scientists who, from the 19th century to the present day, have traveled the length and breadth of the Afar depression, a desolate region but very rich in geosites: from the Erta Ale volcano to the area of Dallol and the Salt Plain, from the geothermal springs of Alalobed to the Awash valley with the various fossil finds.
During the conference there will be several interventions by various experts, university professors, researchers, geographers and historians, with the aim of enhancing the contribution that the geological community has historically produced on the Dancalia area, in terms of studies, research, discoveries, reports, images and geological and geographical maps, and to share new ideas and lines of research

The implementation of the legislation will lead to an expansion of the subjects involved in sustainability reporting which will go from the current 11,700 to around 50,000 companies at a European level and from around 200 companies to more than 4,000 at an Italian level.

During the event ISPRA will present a study on 'Environmental information for sustainable finance' in which it intends to provide useful and supportive elements to businesses, investors and banks, to correctly understand the contents of the information underlying environmental reporting and the ways to generate some of this information required by the new standards.

The event will also be a useful opportunity to stimulate discussion between institutional representatives, those from the business world and the banking/financial sector.

The latest edition of the ISPRA publication "Greenhouse gas emissions in Italy" is online. Reduction objectives for 2030".

The trend in greenhouse gas emissions is decreasing and, thanks to the growth in recent years of energy production from renewable sources (hydroelectric and wind) and the transition to the use of fuels with lower carbon content, in 2022 they will mark a - 21% since 1990.

Despite the positive trend, greenhouse gas emissions in Italy in the last two years continue to grow and reach a total of 413 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent in 2022 (+0.4% compared to 2021). The constant increase in the transport sector is decisive, over 90% of whose emissions come from road transport, which compared to the previous year marks a +5% and confirms a trend that knows no pauses and exceeds 7% since 1990, a value in contrast to those of all other economic sectors which on the contrary recorded marked reductions, with the exception of waste which represents approximately 5% of the national total.

The use of dogs for wildlife conservation and management is taking on an increasingly important role, thanks to the abilities of these animals, for example the ability to recognize odors even very diluted in the environment and to investigate large surfaces in a short time. For these reasons, the LIFE Perdix project used dogs to ascertain the reproduction and distribution of Italian partridges released into the Mezzano Valley. The workshop intends to provide an overview of the different topics in which dogs can be efficiently used for the conservation of biodiversity and to propose specific guidelines for their use.

Mar 15, 2024 09:00 AM — Mar 15, 2024 04:00 PM Torino, ARPA Piemonte, Sala Polifunzionale, Via Pio VII, 9

The Air Quality Report - 2023 Edition, which describes the state and trend of air pollution in Italy, was presented on 15 March in Turin.

In 2023, the annual limit values for atmospheric particulate matter PM10 were respected at all measurement points, as were those for PM2.5 (311 out of 312), with an average reduction for the latter of approximately 13% compared to the average of decade 2013-2022. The daily limit value for PM10 was also respected in 89% of the monitoring stations, with exceptions concentrated above all in the north-east area of the Po basin (47 out of 63 exceedances), in the Vesuvius area and in the province of Frosinone.
The annual value of nitrogen dioxide is within the limits in almost all monitoring stations (98%), which in 2023 marks a reduction of 19% compared to the decade 2013-2022.
The exceedances occur in stations influenced by high road traffic flows: Turin, Milan, Brescia, Genoa, Bologna, Florence, Rome, Naples, Catania and Palermo.

"SNPA contributes to the pursuit of homogeneous levels of environmental protection throughout Italy. With 650 air quality monitoring stations it has one of the largest facilities in Europe and produces 25 million data per year” declared the President of ISPRA and SNPA, Stefano Laporta.

"The 2023 data outline an improvement compared to the recent past. But situations of non-compliance with the limit values persist and we have fallen far behind the deadlines set by the EU directives" declared the ISPRA General Director, Maria Siclari.

Municipal waste in Italy: production, collection, management and energy recovery. Presentation of the ISPRA and Utilitalia 2023 reports
Municipal waste in Italy: production, collection, management and energy recovery. Presentation of the ISPRA and Utilitalia 2023 reports
Dec 21, 2023 09:30 AM — Dec 21, 2023 01:30 PM Rome, Sala Polifunzionale della Presidenza del Consiglio dei Ministri

Municipal waste, production down by 1.8% compared to 2021. National separate collection exceeds 65%.
49.2% of urban waste is recycled but the difference compared to collection is still large.

In 2022, the national production of urban waste - just over 29.1 million tonnes - is not aligned with the trend of the main socio-economic indicators: in the face of increases in GDP and household expenditure (respectively, by 3.7% and 6.1%), municipal waste decreases in all geographical macro-areas. In the 14 municipalities with a resident population above 200 thousand inhabitants, between 2021 and 2022 there was a slight increase of 0.4%.

This data emerges from the ISPRA Urban Waste Report, presented on 21 December together with the Report on Energy Recovery from Waste in Italy, prepared by UTILITALIA in collaboration with Ispra, which contains information on anaerobic digestion and incineration plants with energy recovery of waste in Italy.
