First Italian monitoring of Watch List substances.
Directive 2013/39/EU, under the European Water Framework Directive (WFD), has introduced the new “Watch List” monitoring mechanism in order to collect high quality monitoring data of emerging pollutants in the European water bodies. The emerging substances are monitored for a period of 4 years in a restricted number of European sites and then the identified substances were included in the list of the priority substances in order to determine the chemical status of the European water bodies. The report describes the strategy used to identified the Italian sites, the analytical method used to determine the emerging pollutants and the results of the 1st Italian Watch List.
