CARG project: geological maps, 3D subsoil models and databases in one click

The CARG Project has developed new tools with the aim of responding to the needs of decision makers, businesses, technicians and citizens to make surface and subsoil geological data increasingly accessible and easily usable.

A new access point to all the geological and geothematic maps, the subsoil sheets, the related explanatory notes and databases, produced in the CARG Project, downloadable and reusable, which is accompanied by Geo-IT3D a viewer for navigating and querying the 3D geological models available throughout the country, with harmonized and freely downloadable data.

Two new tools, created by ISPRA for the CARG Project, capable of guaranteeing the sharing and reuse of strategic and high-value data (High-Value Datasets) and providing the knowledge of our territory necessary to effectively respond to future challenges in the field of geological hazards, water, mineral and renewable energy resources, safety of citizens and infrastructures.

Dec 03, 2024 10:00 AM — Dec 03, 2024 01:00 PM Rome, ISPRA, sala Conferenze, Via V. Brancati, 48 and Online

Today, at the ISPRA headquarters in Rome, the 2024 edition of the Report "Land consumption, territorial dynamics and ecosystem services" has been presented by the National System for Environmental Protection (SNPA), which ensures the monitoring activities of the territory and land consumption.

The loss of ecosystem services linked to land consumption is not only an environmental problem, but also an economic one: in 2023 the reduction of the "sponge effect", i.e. the ability of the soil to absorb and retain water and regulate the hydrological cycle, according to estimates, it costs the country over 400 million euros per year. An "expensive soil" that comes alongside the other costs caused by the loss of ecosystem services due to the decrease in habitat quality, the loss of agricultural production, carbon storage or climate regulation.

Overall, land consumption still remains too high, although with a slight decrease compared to the previous year and continues to advance at the rate of approximately 20 hectares per day, covering new 72.5 km2 (a surface area as large as all the buildings in Turin , Bologna and Florence). A lower growth compared to last year's figure, but which is still above the ten-year average of 68.7 km2 (2012-2022) and only partially compensated by the restoration of natural areas (just over 8 km2, due in largely to the recovery of construction site areas).

On the occasion of the presentation of the Report, the winning images of the 2024 Photo Contest "One shot to tell the story of change" will be presented.

For these reasons, iSPRA will inaugurate the School of Specialization in Environmental Disciplines on Thursday 17 October: a national-level school, which will respond, in a systematic and highly qualified way, to training needs on environmental protection issues.

The School will be an authoritative entity that will provide specialist courses of transversal interest to the entire Public Administration and the Armed Forces and Police on issues of environmental protection and sustainability.
The School will also train university students and young researchers, activating advanced training courses and innovative research doctorates, in collaboration with universities.

The School of Specialization in Environmental Disciplines, unique on the national scene, is the result of the teamwork of many people: the researchers and experts of ISPRA who every day, in network with the national and international scientific world, work in the field to increase the knowledge and protect the Environment in which we all live.

The role of ISPRA in light of the new European regulatory framework for the sustainable and circular use of raw materials useful for the ecological and digital transition

One month after the entry into force of the decree, ISPRA launches the national mining program. In total there are 76 mines still active in Italy, 22 relating to materials that are included in the list of 34 critical raw materials of the EU. In 20 of these, feldspar is extracted, an essential mineral for the ceramic industry, and in 2, fluorite (in the municipalities of Bracciano and Silius), which is widely used in the steel, aluminium, glass, electronics and refrigeration. In particular, the Genna Tres Montis fluorspar mine (South Sardegna), which will return to full production at the end of the renovation works, will represent one of the most important in Europe. Of the other 91 fluorspar mines active in the past, some very important ones - to be revalued with current prices quadrupled compared to 1990 - are located in the Bergamo, Brescia and Trentino areas, in addition to those in Sardegna and Lazio

The coastal structure in the updating of the ISPRA information layers dedicated to beaches

A fundamental element for the planning and management of coastlines is the knowledge of long-term coastal evolution, due to the action of the sea, anthropic activity and climate change. The Italian coastal strip plays a strategic role for the socio-economic development of the country.

The constant monitoring of the evolution of the natural and anthropic elements that determine the Italian coastal structure by ISPRA through the updating of the digitalisation and environmental characterization of the national coasts allows us to have a constantly updated picture of the Italian coastal system.

On 26 June during the event entitled "The evolution of Italian beaches in ISPRA monitoring of the coastal strip" the update of the information layers dedicated to beaches will be presented, an important step in understanding the evolution of the beach resource.

Green and blue infrastructure: opportunities and challenges for city planning
May 09, 2024 10:00 AM — May 09, 2024 12:30 PM

The theme of green and blue infrastructures has fully entered the political agendas of central and local administrations, as they are strategic resources for the environmental quality and liveability of contemporary cities. Starting from the European Strategy on green infrastructures and, in our country, from law 10/2013 "Regulations for the development of urban spaces", in fact, over the last decade a regulatory, technical and strategic framework has been emerging that makes the planning and management of urban and peri-urban green infrastructures are matters of absolute urgency.
