Seagrasses are plants that evolved 70 million years ago from land plants, colonizing shallow coastal waters throughout the world, with the sole exception of the Antarctic/Antarctic area.
The most updated estimate of the global area occupied by seagrasses is 160,000 km2, with a total of 72 species, of which seven are found in the Mediterranean Sea.
Underwater seagrass meadows, starting with our Posidonia oceanica, are precious ecosystems for our oceans. They produce enormous quantities of oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, they are biodiversity hotspots as they provide food and shelter for many species, and protect and nourish our beaches.
Unfortunately, these ecosystems are strongly threatened by human impacts and raising public awareness of their importance is essential to improve their protection and conservation.
