Spontaneous Mediterranean species herbaceous for the redevelopment of anthropic environments. State of the art, weak points and employment opportunities

In Mediterranean urban and peri-urban areas, only native plants can contribute to reduce watering costs and garden care services. However, knowledge, appreciation and use of native annuals and biennials non-woody plants in urban and peri-urban green spaces is a recent practice in Italy therefore it requires study and experimentation to evaluate behaviour of the many Mediterranean potential species that can be employed for ornamental purposes in green spaces. Their eco-physiological requirements need further research as well. The ISPRA Handbook 86/2013 is a technical support to the National Strategy for Biodiversity for what concerns urban areas as it is able to unravel questions within a number of priorities like ecological restoration of urban areas, green infrastructures in urban context and city planning standards of green spaces with special regard to biodiversity conservation.
