This year the focus is on the importance of insects for migratory birds. Present in almost all ecosystems around the world, insects are essential food sources for migratory birds on their long journeys. Migratory birds often time their migrations to align with the abundance of insects. They depend on these insects for food during migration stops and for reproductive success and to feed their young.
"Richness and abundance of birds in Italy" indicator from the environmental indicators ISPRA database
The indicator contributes to measuring the abundance and richness of the bird population in Italy, over the course of the year, described on the basis of ringing data, in order to outline the role of Italy in the context of the spatio-temporal distribution of the European avifauna. The 2019-2020 data confirm the absolute relevance of Italy as a migration route of great importance between Europe and Africa, and contribute to defining the critical periods for species useful for conservation and management purposes.
"Health status of migratory bird populations" indicator from the Environmental Indicators ISPRA Database
The indicator provides a picture of the health of common migratory passerine bird populations in Europe through an assessment of the resilience of migratory species to climate change.
