Fourth National Congress of the Italian Association of Atmospheric Sciences and Meteorology

The Congress is intended as a moment of reflection for the Italian scientific community that deals with atmospheric sciences, meteorology and climatology and is a valuable opportunity to promote an analysis on these issues.

ISPRA participated in the work of COP26 in the Italian technical delegation. The overall evaluation of the results is essentially positive, but it is necessary not to lower the ambition of the targets and to rapidly implement them.

Presentation of Earth Technology Expo 2022

On Tuesday 11 January the 2022 edition of Earth Technology Expo will be presented in Rome, which will be held in Florence from 5 to 8 October.
Catastrophic Pandemic, the technological breakthrough of PNRR for cities and smart services, the control of the Earth from Space, resilience, adaptation, prevention, management of meteorological and natural risks will be the main issues addressed during the new edition of Earth Technology Expo.

The post COP-26 and the role of the university education

The session "The world of research" will have the participation of the ISPRA President, Stefano Laporta.
It will be possible to follow the seminar in streaming on the official YouTube channel of the Pontifical Lateran University or to participate in person. In compliance with current legislation, it will be mandatory to access the University with the Covid-19 green certification (Green Pass).

Open ecological transition. Where is the Italian environment going?

A country covered almost 40% by forests, more than Germany and Switzerland, and which has seen protected areas of land and sea grow up to 20% of the national territory. Greenhouse gas emissions, which have decreased by 19% in the last 30 years, are reduced, as are the main sources of air pollution. However, ozone, the situation of large urban centers and the Po Valley are worrying. Progress also for the circular economy: the economy uses less and less natural resources, separate waste collection continues to increase and landfill is increasingly reduced. On the other hand, the situation for land consumption is worsening: 60 square kilometers still lost every year or 15 hectares a day.
ISPRA presented the Open Ecological Transition report on 13 December which allows us to interpret the changes that have occurred in recent years in the aspects of the Italian environment.
It is a clear synthesis of the many dynamics that determine the Italian ecological transition, which immediately brings the most important aspects of each problem or phenomenon to the attention of society, highlighting the critical issues but also the results already achieved or achievable.The document is divided into three parts: The Italian environment at a glance, Natural systems, Human systems, for a total of 12 chapters and 66 items.

The Parliament role in the Italian climate governance

Reflection on the effectiveness of existing regulatory instruments and on the adequacy of the Italian climate governance system
A greater involvement of Parliament in determining Italian climate governance is more than ever necessary to provide the country with a specific regulatory instrument, which reorganizes the matter in its many aspects and which sets ambitious and binding objectives, which could be, following the example of other European countries, an Italian climate law.

Climate crisis and the role of trees

The webinar "Climate crisis and the role of trees" aims to spread right information on a topic which was discussed during the last internation meeting such as G20 and COP26. An ISPRA expert is participating at the event with a presentation on "The climate is changing: ecosystem services and urban forestation actions".

Greenhouse gas emissions: in 2021 estimated increase of 4.8% compared to 2020. Down compared to 2019 (-4.2%)

Based on the data available for 2021, as a consequence of the recovery of economic activities, an increase in greenhouse gas emissions at national level is expected; in fact in 2021 emissions on the national territory increased by 4.8% compared to 2020 against an increase in GDP of 6.1%; compared to 2019, greenhouse gas emissions decreased by 4.2%.

National conference on climate 2021

On 2 December, a few days after the closure of COP26 in Glasgow, the National  Conference on climate returns, the main appointment of Italy for Climate to analyze every year on the progress made by the country on the path towards climate neutrality and to discuss strategies to be implemented to achieve climate goals.

Climate trend in Italy

On 10 November, the state and trend of the climate in Italy will be illustrated. During the event, the results of the latest report "Climate indicators in Italy", which reached its 16th edition in 2021, will be presented.
The report, which describes the climate trend in 2020 and updates the estimate of climatic variations in recent decades in Italy, is largely based on climate data and indicators developed through the National System for the collection, processing and dissemination of Climatological Data of Environmental Interest (SCIA), developed by ISPRA and fed in collaboration with the ARPAs and other bodies that own the main observation networks present on the national territory.

The Italian long-term strategy on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions: emission scenarios and historical trends

In January 2021, the Ministry of the Environment published the Italian long-term strategy on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. The document is the result of the collaboration, launched in 2019, between different Ministries and is largely based on the studies and analyzes of a technical working group in which ISPRA, RSE, GSE, Politecnico di Milano, ENEA and CMCC participated.

ICAT project: ISPRA technical support to Vietnam

With the technical support of ISPRA, Vietnam, a country participating in the ICAT project, presented the NDC update. With this update, it is committed to taking drastic action to respond to climate change. In line with its socio-economic development strategy, Vietnam has pledged to reduce total greenhouse gas emissions by 9% with national resources, reaching up to 27% with international support.

Experimental program of interventions for adaptation to climate change in the urban environment

Presentation of the SNPA report on indicators of the impact of climate change

The presentation of the SNPA Report on the impact indicators of climate change is scheduled for Wednesday 30 June 2021, from 10 am. The day is divided into two parts: the first is a discussion between stakeholders on the problems related to climate change and on the actions to deal with the consequences taking place on our territories, while the second, from 2.30 pm, will propose a technical-scientific study in the course of which the main results of the Report will be presented.

EMAS and climate change

Dialogue with the public and interested parties is, together with the continuous improvement of environmental performance, the main objective of the EC Regulation 1221/2009 EMAS, whose general approach is based on the need for sharing, credibility and transparency. The EMAS Regulation assigns interested parties a role of primary importance in collaboration with the Member State and the Competent Bodies aimed at promoting the EMAS system, informing and disseminating knowledge of the Regulation, and developing effective promotional tools.
