The side event will provide an opportunity to present the main elements of the background paper that IGET has produced as a contribution to the Ninth Environment for Europe Ministerial Conference and to discuss together with key actors from National/European/International institutions about the application of circular economy principles in the tourism sector. Amongst others, the one identified by the EPA Network in the Bellagio declaration, a set of principles capturing the essential elements of a monitoring framework for the transition to a Circular Economy. The background paper aims to provide a contribution to policy makers, in order to promote a sustainable and resilient tourism sector, and to show how the careful use of environmental resources are critical components of the sector and crucial for its recovery from the related impacts of the pandemic. The side event will focus on how tourism activities can shift to the circular economy paradigm to embrace a sustainable and resilient growth pathway and main elements needed for such shift.
The side event will be attended by the President of ISPRA, ISPRA representatives as IGET coordinators, the Ambassador of Italy in Nicosia, the European Environment Agency (EEA), the Directorate General for the internal market, industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs of the European Commission (DG GROW), the Statistical Office of the European Union (EUROSTAT) and the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).
