Antarctica, ISPRA participates in the 40th Italian research expedition
Among the over 140 researchers who have arrived on the most extreme continent, there is also the geologist Saverio Romeo of ISPRA, working until mid-December at the "Mario Zucchelli" Station. This is one of the two Italian research bases present in the area which, together with the Italian-French Concordia base, have been operating within the National Antarctic Research Program (Pnra) since 1985.
Saverio Romeo works at the Antarctic meteorological and climatological observatory managed by ENEA, collecting long-term climatological data capable of monitoring global climate changes. The operations take place at meteorological stations in Victoria Land south of Antarctica and in the eastern sector of the Plateau. Romeo also participates in Enea's educational project "Adopt a school from Antarctica" which includes video connections with Italian schools and researchers from the Mario Zucchelli station.
The National Research Program in Antarctica (Pnra) is financed by the Ministry of University and Research and managed by the National Research Council (Cnr) for scientific coordination, by Enea for the planning and logistical organization of activities at the bases Antarctic and by the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics (OGS) for the technical and scientific management of the icebreaker Laura Bassi.
