Current and future impacts of climate change: new assessment and forecasting tools thanks to the EU Copernicus programme

Estimate the future availability of water resources and develop future projections of heat waves based on greenhouse gas emission scenarios, evaluate the risks of forest fires, predict the possible frequency of drought events and temperature and precipitation anomalies based on seasonal forecast. These are the objectives of the cooperation between national and regional bodies within the framework of the National Collaboration Program (NCP) with the European Center for Medium-Term Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) promoted by the European Union for the use of the tools of the Copernicus Service dedicated to climate change (C3S).

Thanks to this collaboration, the project intends to make use of the best information, data and models currently available at European level in institutional monitoring and forecasting tools to improve the capacity for hydro-climatic assessment and estimation of natural resources and environmental protection. at the national, regional and local scale. The cooperation, launched at the end of 2024, is led by ISPRA and with the participation of the Italian Air Force, the Italian Meteo Agency, ENEA, the CNR with the IBE and IGG institutes, ARPA Campania, ARPA Lombardia, ARPA Piemonte, ARPA Valle d'Aosta, and the Italian Consortium for the Copernicus Academy.

The objective of the project will also be to evaluate the effectiveness of the cloud computing space made available to Member States by the European Weather Cloud managed by the ECMWF.

The cooperation between the partnership and the ECMWF for the Italian C3S NCP project has a duration of 2 years. The planning underlying the agreement was born within the National Copernicus Users Forum.
