Technology to support the management of protected areas

On 4, 5 and 6 November, the activities of the PNRR DigitAP project "Monitoring of pressures acting on habitats using advanced sensors" began at the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise.

The project, carried out within the Investment Fund for the Digitalisation of National Parks and Marine Protected Areas, is aimed at promoting technological innovation in environmental protection and monitoring activities, with particular reference to habitats and species of Community interest.

The main objective of the project is the implementation of an advanced habitat monitoring system using "proximal sensor" technologies, i.e. portable terrestrial laser scanners.

This instrumentation will allow the collection of detailed data on vegetation, accurately detecting changes in habitats, facilitating targeted conservation interventions and the adoption of timely measures in the event of significant changes.

As part of the activities envisaged by the meeting, field inspections were carried out on two different project sites, located in Val Fondillo and Camosciara, where the working group implemented the relevant survey methodologies proposed by the project. The staff of the Park Scientific Service gave logistical and scientific support to the working group, facilitating the detailed understanding of the ecological-stationary characteristics of the area and the integrated understanding of the ecosystems present.
