XII edition of Planet Earth Week: the National Geosciences Festival

Two itineraries in the Lazio Maremma area: geology, archeology and nature
On the occasion of the XII edition of Planet Earth Week (6-13 October 2024) ISPRA is proposing two scientific treks in the Etruscan-Roman city of Vulci, the Fiora river and the Montalto Marina beach.

  • When Oct 12, 2024 to Oct 13, 2024 (Europe/Berlin / UTC200)
  • Where Parco naturalistico archeologico di Vulci, Strada Provinciale 107, Montalto di Castro (VT)
  • Add event to calendar iCal

Saturday 12 October - Vulci and the Fiora river
Starting from the city of Vulci we will reach the valley of the Fiora River, up to the gorges and the Pellicone lake, where prismatic fissured lava emerges surmounted by thick levels of travertine. Part of the area is included in a SAC which protects a river system in good conservation conditions and the related flora and fauna, with typical formations of wet areas, significant riparian forests (including "tunnel") and holm oak forests. This territory also represents one of the most important archaeological areas of Lazio, where Etruscan, Roman and medieval remains coexist.

Registrations will open on 23 September

Sunday 13 October - Montalto beach
The area is almost entirely included in the Special Zone which protects important dune systems, together with their flora and fauna. We will observe the herbaceous vegetation of the first strip of the emerged beach, of the embryonic and consolidated dunes, up to the sclerophyll dune scrub, the coastal juniper grove and the holm oak forest, species typical of Mediterranean environments. Along the coast there are two SCI/SACs characterized by protected habitats. We will talk about the importance of Posidonia oceanica, its banquette and its ecological role as well as describing the coral habitat of the deep seabed. The restoration activity of prairies compromised or degraded by illegal trawling will be illustrated.

Registrations will open on 23 September
