Guidelines for the conservation of Mediterranean trout and its habitat in protected areas and Natura 2000 sites
The Mediterranean trout, included in Annex II of the Habitats Directive 92/43/EEC, is a key species of aquatic ecosystems for its role at the top of the trophic networks of the Apennine, island and hill mountain watercourses.
It is subject to the effects of multiple anthropogenic pressures, including alien trout releases, water catchment, alterations and degradation of river habitats, and climate change. Conservation actions aimed at protecting this species and its habitat are crucial also by considering their contribution in restoring or maintaining the functionality and quality of river ecosystems, in line with the European and National Biodiversity Strategy 2030 and the Nature Restoration Regulation. The guidelines are defined in the framework of the project LIFE STREAMS (LIFE18 NAT/IT/000931) "Salmo ceTtii REcovery Actions in Mediterranean Streams" and addressed to the management authorities of protected areas, Natura 2000 sites, the Regions and Hydrographic District Authorities and also contain indications for the integration of planning and management tools provided by the Habitats Directive and the Water Framework Directive.
