The results of the Italian 2001-2010 mid-winter waterbird counts (IWC project by Wetlands International) are reported. All waterbirds species are routinely monitored, including those of feral origin, escapees and raptors which largely depend on wetlands. On average, more than 1,500,000 birds were counted each year, and more than 80% of Italian wetlands were censused at least once in the decade. A total of 164 waterbirds species were found wintering in Italy. Coot, Black-headed Gull, Mallard, Teal, Yellow-legged Gull, were the five most abundant species; Grey Heron, Cormorant, Mallard, Moorhen and Coot those with the largest winter range. Long-term (1993-2010) and recent (2001-2010) TRIM trends were produced for 100 species. Significantly positive trends are five time more numerous than negative ones in the long term, whereas this ratio is more balanced in the most recent decade.
