Stratigraphy and facies analysis of the Permian and Triassic continental sequence of Nurra: comparisons with Provence and paleogeographic reconstruction

84° Congresso Nazionale della Società Geologica Italiana - Sassari, 2008 - Escursione E06

The field trip shows the stratigraphy and the analysis of continental facies of the Permian and Triassic succession of Nurra (North-western Sardinia) and the parallel correlation with the coeval deposits of Provence through a paleogeographic reconstruction. The sequence object of the excursion regards the Permian of Porto Ferro and Cala del Vino formations and the overlying Triassic units represented by Porticciolo conglomerate and the Cala Viola sandstones. Overall, the whole succession examined consists of conglomerates, sandstones and mudstones predominantly red in colour, rich in volcanic-derived clasts; it is a sequence that is evolving from an environment of a fan-type to a braided river system and then to a meandering river environment. The upper part of the succession is marked by a distinct discontinuity represented, on a regional scale, by a quartz conglomerate (conglomerate of Porticciolo), which passes above to a succession consisting of sandstones and subordinate mudstones, alternating with fluvial and marine influences.
