Abstract
Radon is a radioactive gas produced by the decay of naturally occurring uranium in
soil and water. Radon is found in the indoor air of buildings of all kinds (dwellings,
schools, workplaces) and the concentration can reach values that present a risk to
occupants. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking.
Worldwide, many governments have initiated programs to reduce the health impact
from exposure to radon. Italy is committed to implementing the Council directive
2013/59/Euratom on radiation protection including radon. Average concentrations of
municipalities are shown in this Report. These values are useful for purposes of
planning, but not indicative of the concentration of radon in the single dwelling. In
order to know this value homes must be tested.
