Abstract

Planning and managing urban and periurban green require the support of specific

instruments, together with effective policies and ad hoc implementation measures.

Despite the heterogeneity among Italian regions with regards to land planning

legislations, there are few specific instruments that municipalities can adopt to

manage and/or plan urban and periurban infrastructures with the attention required.

The Green Master Plan, for example, containing a strategic middle-long term vision of

the green system, or the Green Regulation document, addressing the correct design,

maintainance and use of public and/or private green areas. The Green Census is

another important instrument to build a solid - and possibly regularly updated -

knowledge base about the quantity, typology and status of urban green components

(mostly trees). Last but not least, the identification and formal approval of a local

Ecological Network plays a crucial role to recognize a network of interconnected

valuable green areas in order to maximize their social and environmental benefits to

urban communities.
