Qualità dell’ambiente urbano – XI Rapporto (2015)

ISPRA Stato dell’Ambiente 63/15 pagg. 76-124

Abstract

Tourism brings flows of people in "waves" everywhere in the world, with tangible

consequences on the environment, resources and quality of life.

ISPRA’s Urban Environment Quality Report analyzes some "key" factors involved in the

relationship between tourism and environment:

tourist accommodation

, touristic

flows and the waste generation.

Data on tourist accommodations are given at the municipal level, while those related

to tourist flows and the waste generation are at provincial level.

The

trend

in the number of accommodations, overall, shows a growth in the 85 cities

surveyed. In detail, hotels show an increase of 1.7% (differing on the national

performance, -1.9 %), while for the complementary accommodations, in general, the

values are higher (+ 29.6 %) .

Also the

density accommodation

, in the five-years considered, recorded a small

increase (0.6 persons per km

2

).

In 2013, the trend of flows ((arrivals and overnight stays) is in line with the national

decline, in fact, overnight stays (-0.9%) and arrivals don’t show changes.

The tourism intensity, measured by the reports "Arrivals/inhabitants" and " overnight

stays/inhabitants", show always Bolzano, Rimini, Venice, as the cities with the highest

values, even if though the previous year, the changes are negative.

In 2013, 26 provinces out of 83 recorded show an incidence of tourism "surveyed" to

the total waste generation above to the national value. In detail, are largely the same

provinces with high values of the ratio "overnight stays/inhabitants": Rimini (85.4 kg

per capita), Bolzano (62.3 kg per capita), Venice (55.0 kg per capita) and Olbia (48.5

kg per capita).

The 85 cities surveyed, even though they represent just over a quarter of the national

population (28% in 2013), enclosing the main Italian tourist destinations and the

variations observed on this sample are crucial in influencing the trend of the national

tourism sector.
