Mirabile / Qualità dell’ambiente urbano – XI Rapporto (2015)

ISPRA Stato dell’Ambiente 63/15 pagg. 298-318

Abstract

Green heritage in the municipal territory often includes Nature 2000 Network areas,

a system of sites for biodiversity conservation at European scale, which includes SCIs

(Sites of Community Importance) and SPAs (Special Protection Areas). Here three

indicators are analyzed, with particular reference to the 12 cities introduced in this

edition. Information reported are updated at October 2014.

First indicator is the number of Nature 2000 Network sites for each Municipality,

whose analysis reveals that at least one site is located in 69 out of 85 Municipalities

(for a total of 249 sites). According to national situation, SCIs are the most

numerous: in the 69 Municipalities there are 173 SCIs, 35 SPAs and 41 SCIs/SPAs,

and many are included in protected areas (98 out of 249). Second indicator is the

total number of habitats protected under the 92/42/CEE Directive for Municipality.

Among new cities, the higher number of habitats is observed in Crotone (33) and the

most represented macrocategories are coastal and halophytic habitats and forests

(which are also the most represented at national scale). In many Municipalities the

most widespread habitat is a priority one, but they are often in an inadequate state of

conservation. The last indicator is the number of protected species of flora and fauna

for site. Pointing out that a given species is present in more than a site allows to

show how the territory of a given Municipality can be important for the global

conservation of that species. In analyzed sites various priority species are present

and various examples of naturalistic interest are shown.

Reported analysis represents only a small part of the rich biodiversity heritage

located in examined sites, but also if not complete, this analysis underlines the

important rule of these sites for environmental education and for biodiversity

conservation in man-made areas.
